My female betta is all normal except for her mouth. She has had a lump there since I got her but suddenly it has turned into what looks like a hole with something white in it. It looks as if it’s something that’s been shaved into her or growing out of it. Can’t see that it’s anything from the aquarium stuck in a wound as everything is black in my tank. And ideas? Was thinking possibly some kind of abnormal growth or rumour type thing when I first spotted it but it now looks quite sore

What is your ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, ph and GH?
Do a large water change every day until we figure out what is going on.
Hopefully one of our disease experts can help here.

How long has it been like that?

It looks like a bacterial infection but if the fish has had the problem for more than a few weeks, and it hasn't gotten worse, it could be something else.

I shall test my water as soon as I can tonight and get back to you, can’t remember the numbers from last week but know that ammonia and nitrite were 0. The lump has been there for as long as I can remember but it wasn’t an open sore until I noticed it a week ago.

Right, water test results
PH: 7.4
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Constantly battling with nitrates as they are naturally high in our tap water, so was surprised it has got that low. Is this bad?
Temp is at 27 and is in a 105 L with some other female bettas (not much fighting I am aware of) and some neon terras. I don’t have a test for GH, should I get one? It doesn’t seem to be suffering and is still eating.

Don't bother buying a GH test kit. Just take a glass full of tap water to the local pet shop and get them to check it a couple of times a year.

Your water test is fine.

You can try adding 2 heaped tablespoons of rock salt, sea salt or swimming pool salt for every 20 litres of water. Keep the salt in there for 2 weeks and see if it helps.
