Something Wrong With My Betta

Today when I woke up my betta was acting strange. He was positioned straight up and down gulping air.... Then he slowly sunk to the bottom where is he now panting endlessly...I'm not sure what to do but Im just waiting for the heater to cool off then I will change his water...I think he might die

anything else I should do... ? ? ? ? ? this has never happend to me before

Do some water stat tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH and post your results.
Is the tank filtered? If so is the filter cycled?
When was your last water change? How often do you usually do them?
You don't need to wait for the heater to cool off - just switch it off or unplug it.
Has the tank been exposed to any chemicals - deodorant, furniture polish, air freshner, etc?

No signs of any illness ecept his fins looks like they crispy? Im not sure how to explain it but he is a crown tail and the "crowns" do not look like they should...kinda like they have been burnt but not really.

He has a fish on the other side who is acting strange as well... Clamped fins a bit and not really moving much...Kind of staying in the top corner.

If I drop the water to 4 inches my heater wont work.....?

What temp are you keeping the tanks at?
Is the heater usually on? Unless it's cold where you are you might not need it right now. You can also put your heater horizontal near the bottom so it's OK when the water is low.
Crispy - makes me wonder if he's been up against the heater?

No water stats. They are in a 5 gallon divided in half with a heater. No filter. I clean the tank once a week on Wednsdays...

I've kept my bettas like this for 4 years now and never had one get sick or die so I am kinda freaking out.

I have a air freshner that gives off a little spritz of stuff every 30 minutes on the other side of the room. Its never caused any trouble and the 6 gallon beside this tank both bettas are acting fine.

Im scared to go check on him

I am sure he is dying. Do I let him die on his own or should I euthenize him? If so how do I do that? I hope he is not in any pain.

Sry to say he is doing to die there was the same problem with a betta fish in the pet shop my uncle works in. he said they feel no pain but it is better to euthenize him. don't ask me how just if you get any more comments telling you hes going to die euthenize him.

Thanks for the help everyone This is very hard for me after 4 years of betta keeping this is the first thats ever died on me or gotten sick..

I currently have a ziplock bag of water in the freezer that I will drop him in once it gets a layer of ice on top

Sorry for your loss. He looks like a beautiful colour in the photograph. But four years of looking after bettas and this is the first one to get sick or die means you must be doing something right.

Will dropping him into freezing cold water kill him instantly?

now, this is the second time in 2 days i have read that people euthanize by freezing him, but i dont think thats a nice way! surely he would just go into shock?

i have heard of someone using neat medication, kills them very quick, dunno what you all think of that mind.....

with regards to the comment on fish dont feel pain, how do you know? if we as living creatures feel pain, whats saying a poor fish doesnt??
