Ok dudes here goes..

I set a 30g reef tank up 2mnths ago, i have 1 honey damsel 1 pygama wrass (3 lined wrass) and i jus bought a lovely blenny. Ialso have 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 small boxer shrimp, 2 small blue hermits and 10 turbo snails (who r now running out of food hehe) alrdy found a small mantis prob about 1.5cm long. I know where he lives, and i watch him often.

Heres the deal, i did have a long nosed erm thingy fish, but something spooked the poor little lad a week ago and he jumped out the tank during the night I put it down to a shrimp scaring him or summats, 1 death. I also noticed last week my pygama wrass had like bruises on 1 side of his body, but i put this down to the damsel (strange pair, 1 min the wrass cleans him, the next the damsels chasin him of) so thought no more about it. On friday i bought an arrow head crab, always wanted 1 of them, he was a big dude to. Put him in, the damsel gave him some intrest as he does with everything that goes in that tank (hes the boss), but the crab sent him right of with what i can only describe as a flying kick, very amusing, anyways i spend alot of time wotchin my tank, spesh when i put summat new in, i like to know there settled. The crab was fine, feeding, walking about, everything was fine till yesterday.

I went out in the mourning, b4 i did i checked the tank, crab was fine, munchin on summats, came back in the afternoon, everything still k, went back out (fitting a kitchen) came back at 6pm checked tank, and to my horror, the arrow head had been ripped apart limb by limb death 2.

Now im not an expert, but none of my fish r above 2 inch, and the mantis is tiny, so i thought maybe the boxer, phoned the lfs and he was as stumped as me, said the boxer wldnt bother it. So, i either got a bigger mantis in there somewhere or its summats else. I do hear a clicking noise, however, im led to believe that a mantis click is like lots together at once, this click that i hear, only sounds once every 5-10seconds, about 5 times in a row. I also know its not my small mantis making the noise because i hear it while im watchin the mantis, and the only thing moving is his eyes.

So any light u cld shed on this wld be aprish, i want to know who killed my luvly arrow head!!!

How big is the boxer shrimp? If it didn't already kill the arrow crab, will almost certainly go after your cleaner shrimp and rip it apart if its able to get a hold. Boxer shrimp are notorious for ripping other shrimp and crustaceans limb from limb. As far as the mantis...I had a smaller mantis than yours that gave me plenty of trouble so size is not the determining factor in whether or not they can cause deaths in a tank. The fish-related stuff exceeds my range of knoweldge so I can't help there.

Thx for the reply mate. If u measured his body length it wld prob be about an inch, i baught the boxer shrimp and cleaner shrimp at the same time from my lfs, he said they wld be fine together.

Some people have luck keeping boxers and other shrimp together temporarily. Every case I've read/heard about though always winds up in only the boxer being left at the end. I wouldn't go by what the guy at the LFS said; pet store employees/owners don't always know everything about each animal they stock. So far everyone I've encountered both on the web and face-to-face has told me that boxer shrimp are not safe with most other crustaceans, save for a some big hermits that can hold their own against an aggressor.

I currently have a female boxer shrimp that is maybe 1.5" body length, and on a couple occasions it has even made efforts to attack and chase my hands out of the tank. They can get moody and very aggressive without warning.

Agreed, probably the boxershrimp is the culprit. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't gone after the cleaner yet, only a matter of time as Donya said.

Yea its early days yet, the tanks only been stocked for a couple of weeks or so, thx for the info... ill keep my eye on the lil brute.
