Have noticed this twice now but unable to get a pic, my BN which i have had for over 2 years now looks like it has spikes sticking from below its eye area! If can imagine the plec against the back of the tank with its eyes looking at you, that is when i can see them. The spikes are sort of below the eye and near the gill area almost looking like sharp hairs! Any info?

These are called Odontodes and are I belive modified from the armoring that plecos have. The can be pushed out for protection and also as a show of agression or just because they want to. Here is a piture of one of my albino girls showing hers off.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, thats exactly what she is doing, just thought it was odd with not seeing it before!

I've seen most of mine do it from time to time, usually just a few puffs and that's it. I would watch for it if you ever try to move them though, especially if you use a net.

I agree with Teelie. In fact, if you need to remove him then you are best using a plastic container. ;)
