These are australian rainbows.. or at least thats what I bought them as.. I believe the 2 top left are males, and the orangish 1 on the right is a female. They were schooling with a bunch of danios, but none of the danios are with them anymore. I'm thinking about getting 5 bosemani rainbows, as I don't want these 3 to be alone.

Haven't kept or researched either of these fish, so sorry there....but nice pics! :)

I'm no expert on rainbows.

there dosn't appear to be any black on the finnage of your rainbows so I don't think they are australians Melanotaenia fluviatilis, they look more like Sorong Rainbowfish Melanotaenia fredericki to me.

this is the best rainbowfish website out there
perhaps you can match your fish to one on there

I would say that the rainbows are a species of the Melanotaenia Splendida group, possibly Splendida Inorata or Splendida Fluviatilis. The picture you have marked as M shows a male (top) and a female (below) the other picture shows a female also.

The colours arent very good at the moment, I feed my rainbows Sera discus granules, frozen black midge larvae, frozen bloodworm and liquised shrimp (frozen) it helps build them up quickley and brings out the colours.

The male has the longer more pointed finnage and the females is shorter and rounded, the thing about rainbows is there is some pretty drastic differences in colouration between fish of the same species.

These differences can be caused by cross breeding, which I have not had any experience of but I have heard of others who have seen it happen, also a species could have several different colour strains purely because it is found in several different streams or rivers. Unfortunately most rainbows in shops come from Singapore breeders and a lot are just sold as Australian Rainbows and the colours are pretty much washed out.

How big are they, I have had fish get to nearly 2" before a definate id can be made.

I'm maaaaaaaad........ I went to the lfs ... a good 30 min drive.. to get 5 bosemani rainbows for these suckas to school with.. but they decided that the bosemanis werent on sale anymore.. online it said they were $4... it said that last weekend when I went in.. the sale was supposed to be for the whole month.. I read the little board there that says the sales, and they'd taken the bosemanis off the sale board... I was in a very mellow mood, and didn't feel like complaining to the peeps there.. they were marked back up to $23 each..

I gotta find a new store to go to.. Was really irritated by that.
