alright so i wanna make sure i get all the research and homework i can done on the fish and inverts i want for my reef tank, so i am asking for some info.
Its a 38 gal
lots of live rock

so i want to get
1 long nosed hawfish
like 2-3 neon gobies
can anyone sugest any other nice small fish good for a begginer.
maybe a fire hawfish???

-then im gonna have like 20 hermits (scarlet and blue leg)
-good amount of snails

and i want to know some easy corals for a beginner
-can i get a torch coral?
also
-i saw a pom pom pulsing coral (not sure if its the right name??) i really liked that, could i get that ?

also what do all these things eat, and how often ???

thanks so much

pete

The hawkfish might be a bit of a risk with small fish or shrimp, though I have no experience.

For other fish I would look at a mix woth ones which 'do' different things (eg. a couple that live on the rock, some which swim through the rock, and some which spend time in open water).

For comparison in my similar sized tank I have:
- 2 perc. clowns (live in some xenia)
-firefish (open water)
-algae blenny (rock)
-coral beauty (swims in and out of rock)

What lighting do you have?

alright cool.
i dont plan to have any shrimp

i really want like a group of gobies though

as for lighting i have a Compact flourescent 2 X 92 dual actinic and regular 10000 K daylight

A school of neon gobies is awesome. My lfs has 4-5 and they look really nice when they're swimming around together.

You should be good to go, hawkfish are very easy to keep and will not harm inverts. I have had a red and falco hawk, they were both really nice and they were very personable as well. They may attack small fish, although it is usually just a mock charge. Both of my hawks ate flakes within ten seconds of going in the tank, so they are extremely easy to feed as well.

alright, thanks for the great info

i didnt want to start another topic so i just added it here.

When i added my live rock, it had this really nice purple algea, but not its starting to fade and this greenish algea is growing and also this blood red algea. Are these bad or good. the red one looks nice

also i have those little annoying anenomes aiptasia?, how do i get rid of them. i heard there bad

thanks

Oh s**t. Looks like your tank is off to a bad start. The purpleish algae that was fading is called coraline algae. It is the good algae, and the blood red and the greenish algae are bad. This coraline die off happens in all new tanks, if you take good care of the tank, it will come back and begin to spread. Get a good cleanup crew to help this process, although you may have to declare war on the blood red algae, it is usually called cyanobacteria. It is okay to tolerate a little cyano in the tank, but it will grow out of control, suffocating all other sedentary life.

Some good ammunition against cyano is knowing the fact that they desperatly need light and lots of it to survive. What i did to mine is bury the stuff on the gravel, and blow the stuff on the rocks away, then suck it up (both with a pipette) and inject it into the ground. There is also reef-safe chemicals available to destroy cyano.

The aiptasia, aka rock anemones, is a far bigger problem. They are basically self-replicating missile silos. Tell us everything that is in the tank, and we should be able to help you win the war.

Hawkfish will eat invers CM

Don't worry about the loss of color in the coraline, its not a bad start its just a start, wait a fewmonths and it will be fine, there are also dark reds and greens and pinks among coraline algeas, its about algea texture not color.

Hawkfish dont eat inverts, i have had two different species and neither of them touched inverts. What species are you talking about? They are a varied family, maybe we are thinking of different ones. I had a red, and a falco.

I said it was a bad start mostly because of the rock anemones, not the coraline die off. Sorry for that misunderstanding.

Cyano is not light dependant, its not even an algae. Cyanobacter is actually a bacteria which thrives on nutrients. Shutting off lights wont do much to slow it down.

Cyano hates low nutrient water and high flow rates. direct the flow of the tank to where its growi9ng and it will disperse into the water columb. Simply do a water change soon after and thus syphon out the free swimming bacteria. the cyano will probably return but as you keep doing this you are also syphoning out excess nutrients and thus starving it of food. Eventually it will go. Keep an eye on nitrates and phosphates as this is the prime food for cyano, make sure these are as low as you can possibly make them.

Hawkfish are known invert killers. The Scarlet hawkfish is a "risk" in a tank with inverts to be honest. Some people report that theirs have been fine and lived in harmony for years alongside inverts... others dont

As for the aiptasia...

Im in the same predicament as you as the moment.. i have enough to of this at the moment (along with majanoe) to give me a real headache. Peppermint shrimps are natural predators of aiptasia but you need them in numbrs and they wont eat large ones.

Joes Juice is also very effective alone with kalkpaste. Hot water and vinigar also has great results when injected into them.

If cyano isnt light dependant, why doesnt it grow in areas with subdued light?

THere is actually a few "algae" species that are bacteria, freshwater blue-green algae is one of them.

alright so in the tank i have nothing, its only the live rock and live sand
although i do have like a couple button polyps that came on the rock, but that probly doesnt matter.

I just started the tank like a week ago so nothings in it.

i dont know how to upload the pics, this is what came up.

wats the cause ?

how to stop it ?

also about the aiptasia, when i use the vinegar and hot water on them, i should take the rock out of the tank that its on right?
