i've recently made the transition to my seemingly forever in the planning 55g tank and set up my co2 i had in my 24g (i moved and didn't set up the planted side of the tank). now whenever the solenoid is turned on via the timer it makes a lovely "pop" sound and c02 comes a flooding into my tank and then settles down.

i can think of a few reasons for this
-the settings for my co2 bottle are too high (i'm pretty sure they're not)
-the solenoid is knackered?
-i'm being overly protective?

would anyone be able to offer me a suggestion? or where i can buy a lovely shiney (hopefully competatively priced) new solenoid that doesn't involve a drum roll?

cheers

This is the solenoid I bought and use now. I also bought a needle valve and hose from them at the same time. Good shop for equipment.

I don't experience the 'drum roll' but it is normal for the CO2 to go like mad for a minute or 2 before settling down as its built up pressure and is suddenly released.

I think that's pretty normal, what brand soleniod and regulator do you have? I use the D&D system and everytime my controller tells my solenoid to open there's quite and audible clunk, followed by a barrage of CO2 bubbles through the bubble counter.

i'm not too sure what brand they are, i bought the kit off a gentleman on here, it worked quietly before, i can only assume the dormant period of nearly a year has made it noisey or something.

aslong as everyone else is dealing with the same issue i'll connect it back up! cheers super coley and spank

To get signs of overpressure behind the solenoid like that I'd have to guess that the regulator is leaking gas past the diaphragm slightly. Not enought to affect the in use operation but enough to allow the pressure to build up behind the closed solenoid. I wouldn't worry about it unless the problem gets worse. As far as I know most solenods will make a cluck as the electromagnet snaps the valve open. It's normal.
