Hello all
im thinking about getting either a gourami or betta for my tank
what type should i get
maybe a red lizard catfish?
i will add photos tomorrow

the water hardness is less than 7.5

current stocking
2 huge swordtails + babies
a lot of guppies of all sorts (dumbo)
lots of cories ( green/bronze + peppered, maybe emerald idk)
1 mystery snail
3 huge nerite snails( new)

landscape: there is not much thick foliage everywhere, there is thick foliage near the sword plants, (1/3) another 1/3 has some long bacopas and stuff

additional question: who has a link to the foam thingy to cover a filter so it stops the flow?

It would be nice to know your tank size, so we can properly recommend different suitable fish. Also answer to your other question about the foam thingy... Do you mean an intake filter sponge? I have one but its meant for the filter I have... What brand and type of filter do you have?

Would you mind taking a pic of the outlet portion of the filter so I can see the size? I cant help you much with stocking sorry 😐

You should not get a betta with those guppies, they just don’t mix well unfortunately. The betta will either be picked on or attack the guppies.
Could i possibly get a bigger gouramie and then get some sparkling?

The flat part is a flow disperser i cam remove that any time it does not work well…

Honestly I wouldn’t, with all those guppies. The only gourami I would do with all the guppies would be peaceful ones, like honey gourami or Pearl gourami. Honey gourami would be a safer bet. The problem is gourami are soft water fish, guppies are hard water. In general gouramis and guppies just don’t really mix!

I think I remember what you're talking about, but it may have been a mesh-thing to stop shrimp and small fish getting sucked INTO a filter.

For the outlet, you just need a block of filter sponge...
Use a sharp knife to 'stab' the block, but not all the way through.
You'll then be able to stuff the sponge onto the outlet pipe.
This will reduce the flow and the finer the sponge, the greater the reduction.

Next time, when you pay good money for a filter, get one with an adjustable outlet. ;)

i cant seem to raise the hardnes of my water and now the guppies are used to soft water.

I have no experience with red lizards unfortunately. I’ve actually never heard of it!

Honeys are known to be one of the more peaceful gourami, and they stay relatively small.
