So much hostility

Hey all

hope everyone is well?!

So pretty much what the title says!! What is going on guys, I haven’t been on much due to outside of the forum issues but I come back and everyone is having digs at each other and are at each other’s throats.. Not the forum it was and I’m not sure what has happened here!! I understand new members coming in and trying to throw their beliefs around is a part of this but honestly why is no one allowed to share how they keep without being told it’s wrong and not the forum way! Just because a new member might see that does not mean they will run this way where there is more info on how a lot of you do it in the correct way! Some person has commented on a post from over 2 months ago to have a dig at emeraldking for his way of keeping which to me was not called for, did I say something.. yes I did as it as emerald is a well respect person in the community. You all are amazing at what you do and very knowledgeable but the support there once was does not really show anymore and if it does it’s only between certain members. Some might like this post and that’s fine not everyone is going to agree and I’m okay with that because it’s not a dig at anyone it’s just what I see.
Well, it's funny that it's about me but I'm again the last one to hear about it....
Well, I've already replied within the topic itself. There was no rudeness coming from my side (already from the start) but from a fellow dutch person (he/she) who I really don't know. I've also written that I would like to let it go. For it's probably an ego thing of this person. Let her/she just be.

I can tell you that within the aquaristic field there's sadly a lot of envy and hostility going on. I don't get it. Why? Overhere in Holland I do know a number of persons that just want(ed) to make a big name in no time without the proper background. A number are already gone from the scene. At some point when it gets too difficult to answer certain specific questions, or even hard to provide what they've promised, people will find out which act they've played. I like to keep my distance from them. It's also not worth the effort or energy. If they like to be "the socalled specialist, just let them... I believe in karma...
I do have a certain knowledge but I'm not arrogant enough to say that I know everything. For I don't... No matter your age, every day is a learning process. Unfortunately, there will always be people that need to be number one whatever the costs...

I haven't heard of this person anymore. Maybe she/he realized something when I wrote honestly that I'm familiar and that I'm active within the serious guppy world. I do know a lot of breeders and if someone says something completely different about serious guppy breeders in Holland or Western-Europe, I probably would've known.

But as in the original topic. I'm not willing to be part of such an ego thing. This forum is a friendly site and we're here to learn from eachother within the aquaristic field.

It's weekend people.... So, enjoy! :yahoo:

I agree with you @Aussie_Bristle TFF have changed (in a bad way) over a past months.

Some people are rude and sometimes doesn’t accept any quark of fish keeping at all, the fact that fish keeping is so strict by them caught me off guard as well and I almost left the forum.

Hmm.. Here is a long winded opinion on the topic:

Considered from an unbiased point: if we conjecture that hostility on the forum has increased over recent months - then we can arguably surmise it partially stems from the pandemic, since the hobby is (mostly) an indoor activity - which is where everyone has been sitting all year trying to entertain themselves.

This likely brings more people to the forum as they solve beginner hobbyist questions and problems. Even as I type this, there are 10 members and almost 500 guests online at 3am my time. The forum has simply been around long enough, that anyone occasionally googling tank/fish problems is bound to come across it at some point.

I mean, how many of us found the forum for that exact reason? I know I did.

So it kind of makes sense, that there would be more hostility. There is so much tension in today's societal climates that, for the year at least, I think a lot of people "need" their new personal endeavors to work out more than they "want" them to work out - because a lot of other factors in life have felt abnormally out of control for some time now.

It makes those new endeavors feel even more personal (and defeating) when problems arise - which is how most of 2020 has felt for a lot of the world (in my opinion at least).

Times like these - maybe being more virtuous by exercising patience will take advice further.

Although most of you disagree with me there are some ppl that have come forward and agreed. You can’t just blame this on the pandemic, that’s like saying I kicked the cat because I was bored... you are all responsible for your own actions regardless of what has happened. But although there are those of you that disagree you still have not addressed or even remotely asked the others that do agree with me about their thoughts. And that’s fine if this is how you want to address the issue but tbh I don’t want to be apart of it so on that note I will be moving on from the forum.

@emeraldking the OP was not entirely about you. Yes I did mentioned that episode relating to you as it was an example and the arrogance and rudeness of that person was so out of line. You my friend were never once hostile and were very well mannered as always.

As for you want to see hostility you should go to this site or this site. I’m not even going to entertain this tbh

Well, I'm not disagreeing with you. I think there is a lot of hostility going on (I unfollowed another thread today--a thread that used to be really run to follow--because people are arguing vehemently about really stupid stuff), I just don't think it is my job to stop it, even if I thought I could. Some people are just like that, sometimes.

AB, you are one of the most encouraging, positive people on here and I'd hate to see you go, but you have to do what's best for you. I respect that.

As a new member of the site I haven’t seen a great deal of really ‘cross the line‘ hostility. Ive yet to post in a forum that doesn’t have a group of members who will actively seek out posts and be quite negative if you have an opinion that differs from theirs.

As a newbie you post and cross your fingers that you don’t get flamed - with a hobby like this, everyone has their opinion about methods and products and they confuse that with factual information.

As the previous poster said - you have to take responsibility for your actions and can’t blame the lockdown or anything else for rude or intolerant behaviour.

My opinion however is that as a collective group of people - if we see that type of over the top response that can escalate into effectively bullying it should be stopped then and there -we shouldn’t be afraid to call people out on it.

Theres a fine line between freedom of speech / having an opinion and bullying or aggressive behaviour but i would prefer to err on the side of caution rather than have a member feel intimidated by someone else just for posting a question or opinion that is different

I didn’t see the post that this stemmed from though.. however if we consider the things going on in the world, the amount of people and families in poverty and some of the awful news we hear about on tv - arguing and getting wound up about guppies seems a bit petty?
