Can't believe this but bought 3 Pakistani Loaches on Saturday, had set up a quarantine tank for them, yesterday all 3 were dead, tested the water and it was fine, went to the lfs where I got them and they tested the water, it was fine, they have replaced them which is good, but I read somewhere someone else had problems with these is quarantine, so they just put them in their main tank. So with the 3 new ones I've done just that, as I'm not fully stocked I'll take the chance.

Anyway, this now leaves me in a dilemma, what should I do with the quarantine tank, should I change all the water and setup again, should I try and find out what went wrong, any advice would be good.

Thanks,

Keith

What was the ph of the store to your tank, and how long did you climatise them for.

How long between putting them in the tank and their untimely demise?
That sounds a bit unlucky if you ask me. Its good that the LFS replaced them, but (and please don't take this the wrong way) I think its probably more to do with the q tank than the fish themselves.

How did you go about setting up the tank, and what was its stats (size, filter type, contents etc).

Let us know what went on, and I'm sure some one will be able to identify what the problem was.

Wilder: When you say acclimatised, I'm assuming you mean how long the bag was left in my tank for the water to equalise temps, that was about 45 mins. Not sure what the ph of the lfs is, when I went tonight and he tested my water, my pH was @ 7.6 and he didn't comment that this was an issue.

ncjharris: tank is a 30 litre tank, fluval 2 internal filter, tetratec heater, filter media had sat in the top of my juwel filter for about 2 weeks to prime it bacteria wise. Fish went in on Saturday evening and were gone yesterday, monday so they lasted @ 48hours, don't worry I won't take it the wrong way, I'm guessing it's something I might have done, I just want to find out what if possible so I don't do it again. As my tank gets more populated the more reason to use the quarantine tank for new acquisitions.

Cheers,

Keith

Just checking as if there was a big difference in ph it could of been ph shock.

No problem, think what I might do is just clean everything and start again, maybe let it run longer and use ammonia to simulate fishload and see how it copes.

Hmm, usually acclimating is, you float the bag, and you add a little tank water to the bag to adjust the fish to the ph and other changes in the water. My guess is, these fish just aren't hardy for some reason, and the stress from the move, the new water acclimations, and perhaps like, temp change was just too much.

Don't beat yourself up, sometimes this stuff just happens.

Interestingly, tonight 2 of the new ones are being a bit elusive, hiding behind a cave in the tank, they have only come out a couple of times and one has gone really light in colour, the third is out all the time, swimming all over the place. So I'm not sure if these might be going the same way as the others :(

If one is pale is definately is stressed, any laboured breathing.

Can't tell, two of them are hiding, I've only seen them for a couple of minutes, if it is stressed I guess there isn't much I can do, would turning off the lights help at all?

Keith

Yes turns the lights off, can you add some stress coat.

OK, lights are off, I do have some stress coat I can use, I used some Melafix in the tank last night as one of my guppies was flicking a bit, when I looked closely its side fin had something that looked white, but when we looked closer I wondered if it had been nipped, so I added the Melafix as a precaution, can I add the Stress coat as well?

Keith

Should be fine to add the stress coat.
