When I first step up my tank it bought two plants, after 3 weeks I found two snails after I had taken out the plants (because they had died). The snails are now breeding. What shall I do? What type of snails are they?

I have a feeling snails are asexual- which means that they can breed by themselves and don't require a second snail. I would recommend taking both snails out now as before you know it you will have a whole colony of them! I put my snails in my fish pond. If you post a picture I might be able to tell what type they are.

i think you mean hermaphroditic. and while that means they have both male and female "parts" they DO need another snail to breed. they swap sperm with any other snail they happen to come across and then either lay eggs or live baby snails. they can not breed with themselves(this goes for all hermaphrodites)!
it also depends on which type of snail. some do have separate sexes!
a little more description as to what the snails look like (a pic would be even better). if you are worried that they will take over the tank, just dont overfeed. if not enough food for the snails. the population is self-limiting. and snails are not necessarily a bad thing. they are great little scavengers that do a great! job at cleaning up. again, just dont overfeed the tank and you should be OK. and they almost certainly came in as hitch-hikers on the plants.
cheers
