Hi all

can those tiny snails that sometimes comes with the fresh vegetables be used in a tank? and is it safe for the fish to eat them?

adding snails to a tank isnt realy a good idea IMO. they breed like rabbits and are a nightmare to get rid off.

why do you want to add them? is it just for the fish to eat?

There's nothing wrong with snails. Sure they eat plants and multiple quickly, but they can be kept under control with little hassle.

I don't know if you have them, but some fish (loaches in particular) will certainly love you for adding snails... and will keep the population well under control.

The old lettuce collection technique also works wonders if you've got too many.

They do add life in small doses. Just don't let them take over the tank.

imo they are a complete pain in the arse.

yes clown loaches love them but to me its like adding rats to your house,,

vermin and pests :(

gixer stop beating around the bush and tell us how you really feel about snails ;) I agree that they can be a pain if they get hold of a tank but as with everything in this hobby you have to plan for each addition to the tank. If you want snails then you must either be prepared to manually thin them out or get the fish that will do the job for you. IMO they do add a new facet to any tank and in their own right are quite beneficial and interesting.

Hey,

I am also thinking about using snails and have heard various opinions. How much better are they at taking care of algae compared to plecos? What fish besides loaches like to eat snails that would fit into a 25 gallon tank.

Thanks

i hate then too,i crush the bigger ones for the tetras to eat and try to vac out the rest, then the giant snail depositor pays a visit and wham shed loads of crawlies back :grr:

I had a problem with lots of snails till I got some clown loaches, corydoras, etc. Also what I do is if I see any I pic it up and crush it, after a bit you look at the shell and is so nice and empty :D. I see them eat it , they love it B)

If you have snail eating fish then snails are great no matter how they reproduce or eat plants because the snail eaters wll always eat faster than they reproduce. IMO. But I loved snails before I got my puffer I like to have clean glass.

Opcn

i am intending to use the snails to clear the algae blomming in my tank...what should i get..snails or ottos? i heard the ottos are better cleaners...
