I am working on a figure eight set up and I'm setting up a breeding tank for my mystery snails. I chose these snails for two reasons, they were avaiable and I read they were good breeders under good conditions. Now I have gotten some conflicting info on them being approieate for figure eights. Someone told me they would not be suitable for keeping the teeth trimmed. Any ideas? What snails do you use?

Apple snails don't breed all that fast, so they're an odd choice. But there's no reason at all not to use them. You might keep some Physa spp in with them, so that you have a variety of snails, and eventually you'll figure out which ones are best.

OK, I dont have a puffer but I would use Malaysian Trumpet Snails. My Yoyo Loaches used to devour them. And everyday they breed like Rabbits! :hey:

There is nothing wrong with using Malayan trumpet snails as food for loaches because they suck out the bodies rather than crack the shells. However, with pufferfish there are a few stories of puffers cracking their teeth trying to open large Malayan trumpet snails. I have never observed this, despite keeping Malayan trumpet snails and puffers together for many years. But nonetheless there are experienced puffer-keepers who consider Malayan trumpet snails needlessly risky.

i got some rams horn snails today from aquabid.com. they look good and they all arrived alive. someone has already left some eggs on the tank so I think these will work out way better than the mystery snails (who I have yet to even see mate). I read that a calcium supplement is good for shell development and was wondering if in this case it would be a negative to add calcium because it might make the shell to strong or would it just make the shell better for tooth trimming? Also, what does everyone feed their feed their snails? Any special supplements that would be beneficial?

I used to have a major trumpet snail prob in my 100litre tank so I'd grab a spoon full of baby trumpet snails and throw them in with my GSP's and they loved them, ate the lot.

Hi

I would recommend a calcium supplement, I breed ramshorns for my GSP and after a while the larger ones shells started to disintegrate.

On advice I added a weighted cuttlefish and its working.

I find the ramshorn breed really well and I quite like the look of the red ones, so I fed any darker ones to my GSP and now I have a tank of 100's of lovely red ramshorns.

My GSP loves them.

I had a MTS snail problem in my community tank but was so afraid to move the problem to my GSP tank that I never tried himon them. Assassin snails got rid of them for me in a matter of a couple of months.

Good luck with your f8.

my little ramshorns are really laying eggs! oh my they are everywhere! it's neat to watch them develop inside the eggs, my kids love it. I did put some chrushed cuttlebone in the tank because it was what I had for my hermit crabs so I'm not sure how much was just sucked up by the filter. The large chunks sunk to the bottom and I sometimes see them possibly eating them. I've been feeding them algee wafers, fish flake, and spinach. I will pick up a new cuttlebone next time I'm at the LPS. Hoping all this will make them healthy snacks!
