hey, first post here, ill try keep it small. ok ive always just kept fish in my tropical set ups. Ive recently moved house and my tank is now established and ready for some fish, but i was wondering if snails n maybe a crab are a good idea?

what do snails eat? do they try get out the tank or will they stay in the water? do crabs need to come out of the water? as my water level is pretty much at the top.

anyone with some info would be great. oh and im in england, so what species will i most likely find?

Thanks

Depends on what snail but frozen veg. algae, left over food and most other things.

As for crab you will likely find red claw crabs which are brackish and need access to land.

:good:

I have rcc in my tropical tank and it seems quite happy to stay at the bottom of tank only the once has it tried sitting on filter but not the very top just the side with maybe 1 or 2 claws above water. If he wanted to he could sit on top, must depend on the crab it self and what it wants to do. We love our rcc.

when a rcc sheds, it must be able to get on land, or it's shell won't harden and it will die. They also live happier, longer lives in brackish water.

Female briggs will try to get out of the tank to lay eggs. I have a very determined one who actually broke through pantyhose and electrical tape to get out. (Fell four feet to the floor, crawled up the desk five inches and laid a huge amount of eggs, then went traveling to look for water. :X ) She's now duct taped into the tank, with no issues. Otherwise they stay put.

Snails are fun, but they need 2.5 gallons a piece, and they need to eat a lot to stay healthy and grow, and they poo a lot. One in a tank probably won't be much work. I have five, and I'm cleaning every other day. Me and my bright ideas. :D I do love them, though. They're facinating to watch, and I think I enjoy them more than the fish.
