We are new to having fish... Upon buying live plants and fish we started to see a number of snails appear in the tank.. Within 2 weeks there were lots.. We have been removing these manually and with the help of loaches.. When we enquired at several fish stores about how these snails just appeared and we said we heard that they come in water when you buy plants or fish to which we were told by all fish shop people that they actually come in our tap water...

My question is, is that true, do these snails actually come from our tap water and not off plants and/or in the water you bring the fish home in, when you put them in the tank? :look:

Pest snails are more likely to come from the plants you bought, if you check out the tanks you bought the plants from you will probably see adult snails in there.

No it's not true, snails do not come out in tap water! the petstore were having you on, they will be introduced by either the gravel or plants that you add to the tank or even second hand decorations that have already been in a tank with snails, it's the only way they can hitch a ride, snails can breed prolifically in favourable water with plenty of food and soon overrun a tank making it look like they have just appeared, they really are tiny when born so even though there could be many we don't see them till they are bigger, water boards put far to many chemicals in water to kill any nasties before they reach our supply.

LOL

Sorry they are having a lough!!!
Water companies add chemicals to tap water to kill off bacteria, and is also filtered down to microscopic levels removing everything.

If the shop rearly think they come from tap water then perhaps find a better shop to spend your money in.

Thank you to everyone who replied to our question. We both thought ourselves how could snails be in tap water too and every time we insisted this couldn't be true, they insisted they were in tap water  . We went to several additional places who said the same.. We still couldn't believe it as like you all said their are chemicals put in the water to stop such things happen, the outrage if this was true.. It is rather funny to think this is could happen.. Only in Australia... he-heh.. :hyper: Thank you again for all your replies... Much appreciated.. :)
