Before I knew much about my snails I thought that perhaps it was natural for them to loose pieces of their shell perhaps to growth etc. Now I realize however that it is a calcium deficiency and thus have added some cuttlefish bone..now I'm seeking advice on how to repair the past damages for optimum health!! any help is muchly appreciated :)

Hello,

I had the same problem, maybe not loosing parts of the shell, but a slow deterioration of the shell...
My wife had some nail harderner which I used on the little slider...
Apart from now having a white shell - He's never looked back....

regards,

Z

do you remember what kind you used?

sorry i thought i responded to this thread...i appoligise for not.

this is a common issue with snails, and i have developed several solutions.
one the snail needs more calcium in his diet, this being said how do you introduce calcium to the snail?
one cuttle bone: probally the simpliest thing you can do, it will float at first but later sink, the snails will munch on it and build up the strength in thier shells.
tums: my snails love tums, the down side is they will cloud your water and turn the snail underneath it black. (that i am not sure why) so my suggestion is to brake the tums down for the ammount of snails in your tank, if you have more then 5 drop the whole tablet, otherwise brake it down to more managable peices that a single snail will eat.
Calcium tablets: the one you take for vitamins are quite useful. what i have done with them is i will brake the tablet apart into smaller peices then put a small amount of water in it and make a kind of paste. then i take the snails out of the water and gently put the paste on the shells. if you have multiple snails this is also a great way for them to get more calcium in their system since they will climb over each other and eat algae and the calcium off their sibling snail off.

those are just a few of my solutions, i hope i wasn't too late to help

Sorry if im just being dumb... but what on Earth is a 'tum'?

tums, its an antacid its also loaded with calcium.

the snails love them, espically the tropical flavored ones
