I have two fish tanks, a 2 gallon hex and a 3 gallon. Each tank held one male beta and one snail. The water and lighting conditions were identical. The snail in the 3 gallon tank has grown larger and larger, but never reproduced. The snail in the 2 gallon tank produced so many offspring that I finally had to drain it completely and changed everything in it to make sure they were gone.

What's the difference here? As far as I've been able to discern, snails do not necessarily need two to reproduce. Both snails were put in when they were very small.

I'm not sure what type of snail they are; they were a dark brown/gray color.

I think you might have more luck posting this in the other inverts section as this one is for Saltwater/marine inverts.

Some snails cant self fertilise and some can. I dont know a lot about snails to be honest but it could be possible one was fertilised before you got it and so it could then lay eggs and then have more snails to reproduce with. This is just a wild guess on my part though.

They are both probably incomplete hermaphrodites (have both sexes but need to mate to reproduce). Some sanils are also capable of parthenogenesis, where in the abscence of a mate clones are produced.
