I have always wanted to keep snails but i am always afraid of an infestation!!!

i have a planted tank with some b/w tetras blue acara and firemouth cichlids and some peppered corys and a sucking loach, ph is about 6.6 and temp about 26/27.

i would like to add some snails but i dont want them to

1) infest the tank.
2) destroy the plants.
3) become victims of the other residents.

are there any types that can be recommended? if they are colourful that would be a bonus

hi johney

i can recommend these

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/324656-young-apple-snails/

just brought a couple myself, apple snails are excellent, they are either male or female so reproduce ramdomly, the females will lay eggs in clutches out of the water, usually in the hood by the lights, they take several weeks to hatch, so you just throw the clutch away if you dont want baby snails. di

oh they come in purple, blue, pink, etc, and this seller is very good i can vouch for them. di

sounds good - but i read that apple snails need a ph over 7 otherwise their shells degrade ??

I think all snails need to be in a pH of 7 or higher, they need the alkaline water for their shells...

edit: didn't see the mention of calcium above, however I think if in an acidic water (pH < 7) their shells will suffer...
