My daughter's 10 gal has a really bad smell. The whole tank has a bad odor but yesterday when I was cleaning out the filter a Whisper 30 I noticed that the stink coming from the bacteria collection sponge was overpowering. It smells really bitter, nothing like the normal earthy smell of my other tanks. I've read that blue green algae can have an unpleasant odor but I cannot see any in the tank. There are a ton of snails in there so you never see a spot of algae. What do you guys think? Could blue green algae be growing only in the filter or could it be something else? Do you know if you can use erythromycin in a tank with shrimp and snails?
Here's what's in the tank: 4 zebra danio, 2 ruby barbs, 2 balloon mollies, 2 cories and a 2 inch pleco. (he will be moved sometime in January) There are 4 ghost shrimp in there and tons of snails, mystery, apple and ramshorn. The smell does not seem to be effecting the fish at all. They all seem healthy. Water params are good. Ammonia 0, nitrite 0.

no idea! sorry, hmmm probably, ynot take them out temporarily? for like a few weeks or even months?. dunno, just a suggestion

could there have been some snail births that you were not aware of? Maybe some of the eggs got sucked up in the filter???other than that no clue////sorry
