Finally a good photo of one of my smaragdina, and a female no less! I have been trying forever and I finally got one! *Joy* My camera is working today, yay. I think this photo turned out GREAT, I'm just so tickled with it. X3

Hi I just bought a pair of Betta smaragdina but we had a devil of job sexing them how do you tell the diff ?

Amerce, super easy. Males are bigger darker and more colorful. Females are smaller, lighter, with less color and they have an egg spot, you can see this female's in the photo.

Neal, oh they're very colorful. The males are anyway. Yes, they are a differant species, Betta Smaragdina.

Right hopefully the two I bought yesterday should have settled in properly today, so I'm female spotting now I've read that you can have a harem in the tank with 2 to 1 male, is that right or can they get aggressive like most betta's when it comes to spawning time ?

Amerce, I personally have one male per female, and the most they ever do it take a couple bites out of each other's fins. Before it gets to serious, one had always backed down and left to hide his defeat. Caves and lots of hiding places help. They stake out their own areas and otherwise avoid each other except to eat.
