I have always wanted to keep Marine, right now I keep a Discus tank but I was thinking about making a small tank I have of 16 inches across 8 inches high into a marine tank for one or two small Marine fish which would be fair to keep them in.

i would suggest getting a bigger tank, something like 30gallons to start off with, anything smaller for a beginner is goign to be very hard.. IMO

Hi there CM

My 1st Reef Tank was only 18g and I didnt really have an awful lot of problems, but I did upgrade quiet quickly so it ended up costing me more in the long run, IMO if you do want to go for a Nano as your 1st set up, you will need to do a lot of reading on them, I will pm you with some links to 3 site's that will help you out.

Some of your biggest problems with Nano's are Evaporation, Salinity, Temp & Nutrients Export, these can all be over come by topping up regularly, & checking reading daily, Fitting a PC fan will help the temp & regular water changes will help export any crap in the tank as you probably wont have a skimmer on a tank that size.

The other thing is that once you start & have 1 fish you will be hooked (so to speak) and will want to upgrade.

i started with a 12g nano and upgraded just recently to a 30. if i weren't on the 3rd floor i'd have upgraded to a much larger tank. chac is right, you'll get the marine bug and want a larger tank in a very short amount of time!

I've just started off a 15G nano, first ever SW tank. I just monitored the levels carefully, didn't skimp on live-rock and thats about it. As long as you are prepared to be patient if your Live-Rock isn't fully cured it's not as hard as people may think. Just keep on top of the levels in your tank and don't let them fluctuate alot.
