Hi all, have been out of the hobby for a decade or so but redoing a tank for a friend I’m staying with.
I‘m not sure on exact size of tank, probably about 250-300 litres but could be up to 400. The fish in the tank (permanent residents are 4x midsize clown loaches, 30 tetras - mix of cardinals and neons, 1 small bristlenose pleco. 2x danios and 1x “gudgee“ are rescue fish that will be rehomed) are all seemingly healthy and active but the tank is a bit of a mess. The cardinal tetras are breeding.
There’s a lot of large particulate matter (seems to be dead duckweed) and algae (algae isn’t too bad, tank gets a bit of direct sun). But the tank is underfiltrated and underoxygenated at the very least (there is a bubble curtain, but if it gets turned off/power is bumped the fish look like they’re about to die after about an hour). There is an infestation of duckweed, and the other plants in the tank don’t seem to be doing amazingly.
So I‘ve given it a good clean, tried to get all the duckweed out andordered a heavier filtration system - a Nautilus 2700 - to give a bit more flow, but there are a dozen or so juvenile tetras in there. They’re a bit bigger than fry and seem to be decent swimmers, but I am worried about them getting sucked in. Is that a valid concern? If so, good ways to prevent?
