Hi guys and girls, i was wondering if anybody could suggest a small plec that could be suitably kept in a 100ltr tank?

The tank already has a zebra loach and two golden zebra loaches(botia histronica).

The pank has drift wood and real plants, and very fine gravel.

Any ideas that aren't too hard to get hold of?

Bristlenoses would be a good choice for this size tank. I would say 1 or 2 BNs would be a maximum. They're pretty easy to get hold of at your LFS and won't cost you an arm and a leg. If you want something a bit more fancy, you can get them in albino, longfin and calico varieties too :)

bristlenoses? i thought they got quite large. I like the look of them guys aswell so i like the idea of this. Are they easy to identify in the shop or are they sometimes sold under the wrong names to something that will get too large or aggressive?

or if your like me and think bristlenoses are bloomin ugly, try clown plecs or bulldog plecs, these are small, and better looking than bristlenoses in my opinion!

^^ i agree!

im getting 2 x clown pleco's when my tank has cycled, they grow to around 4-5 inches max,

bulldogs max out at 2 inches.(or there abouts :)

the link i posted above gives yu a very nice choice,

Queen Arabesque Pleco L260~ 5" 125mm

Clown Pleco, Ringlet Pleco, L104, L162, LDA22- 4" 100mm

Chocolate Zebra Pleco, L270, L307, LDA76- 4" 100mm

Pitbull Plec LDA25 - 2" 50mm

any of tese would be a good choice in my opinion. bulldog plecs are cheap as chips, chocolate plecs are around 20 quid each, clowns are less than 10 quid, and queenies are around 35-50 depending on where you go.

bare in mind that bn's are messy buggers! and the females have very few, sometimes no bristles around there mouths.

Tank dimensions?, plenty of tanks are all shapes and sizes nowadays and the footprint would be all that matters.

What temperature is the tank been or will be kept at?, some of the plecs listed above prefer much higher temperatures than others.

The L260 and the L270 seem to be very hard to obtain at a sub adult/adult size so even though they would be a nice addition they will pose a problem to get larger specimens.

Pitbulls are one of them plecs that do like a few of there own kind so i would recommend a minimum of 3 would be sufficient.

Just remember the plecs actually listed above require very different dietary requirements to each other and you will need to research which foods are best for keeping them.

^^ agreed!
i was assuming the tank was your average 36x15x12 or there abouts, and of course if it was a tall thin tank then possibly no pleco would be suitable.
i thought it was pit bulls (sometimes called rubber nose plecs i think?) prefferred to be in groups.

you would be best giving tank dimensions, tank mates, food you plan to feed etc and we could make more accurate suggestions.

^^In previous post.

yep they are actually better kept in groups, lovely looking plecs aswell but don't seem to be to popular round my parts, not to sure if you have any round yours :)

No rubbernose are often referred to as bulldog and vice versa, not a huge plec at an average of 4 inches but equally as nice as pitbulls :)

i tend to forget not all counties stock the same fish, luckily there are availible to me :)

i agree, forgot to mention this :good:

i was merely giving some examples of nice plecs that are not too large and among some of the '' most pleasant '' the most beautiful in my opinion would be the zebra plecostomus :) what ever his/her decision, im sure researching that particular pleco would have been imminent :)

You made good choices :good: , problems just lies with what the OP requires and needs in a plec, people just tend to think that plecs eat algae lol and infact there are very few that do so giving and getting the full info is always best to advise.

Couldn't agree more on the 46's stunning little things and miss mine soooo much :( lol

Hi tried to reply to this much earlier but batteries dead in keyboard , oh the joy , would recommend bristlenose , seen them for £5.75 and £4.00 but have heard of them being sold for a tenner, at first I thought they were pretty ugly but they are not the most expensive plec and they are peaceful and pretty hardy, I am certainly no expert but I was advised by LFS that clown plec and bulldog plec need a fast or strong current , have also seen rubber lipped? / rubber mouthed? plec which are very attractive too. sky is the limit , did you check the previous link , have fun !!!!!!!!!!! :good:

you owned one? wow, gotta love those L46's, the only thing stoppingme getting one for my 4ft tank is the price :( a pair on ebay for 250 quid! lol

and yes, people often buy plecs for the cleaning duties, like the clowns and many others, there not great algae eaters. but ive said many times before, plecs should not be bought for there sevices, they are not employees.lol tey help reduce algea but they should be added as a valued adition to the aquarium :good:

I had a few yes mate, didn't see them much lol but stunning little things. Before getting them even if you can get them at a decent price be careful on tank mates for them. Very much a timid little plec so tanks mates should be chosen quite carefully :).

Sorry OP sort of went off topic a little

TBH they will be fine in a moderate flowing tank, most plecs come from a fast current but IMO it's not that essential in a home aquarium and tank bred would be bred in these conditions. It's not something that's going to cause problem nor be detrimental to the fishes health :good:
