Small Koi In A 40gal?

i was thinking of starting up a coldwater koi tank with 2 small koi around 4", in a 40gal.
would it be ok, if i had good filtration?

the koi would not be in there for long, just till they are big enough for my pond.

how long does it take for a koi to reach 6-7inches from 3-4 inches?

They will be fine ina tank with good filtration - size growth depends on the breeding (how big the parents were and how quickly they grew) and the water area they are in. Then you can hopefully move them up. I prefer koi to be in ponds as they are best viewed from above!

sorry for the delay, i was hoping to keep them in there just over a year, because i know that carp take a long time to grow, a 30lb carp could take as long as 40-50 years or longer,i dont know if koi grow faster than ot her carp like mirror or common but just over a year or even 2 years in the tank, would that be ok?

koi do modt of their growing in the first few years so no i dont personally think you should do it.

if you meant a year or two regardless of their size, it's probably inadvisable, but if you meant - and i think you did from your first post - NO LONGER than a year or two, than you'll probably be okay, just so long as th tank is well looked after and you move them as soon as they are big enough. If you don't you risk stunting them

Someone told me that they grow quicker in warm water indoors in a tank as my friend is keeping a couple in a tank in his room so they grow big enough so the pikey's dont steal them from his pond... again

what do you mean by pikeys? is it some kind of bird?

i certainly wouldnt be adding koi into a pond containing pike if thats what he intends ,regardless of the size the pike will continue to grow and hes offering up nothing more than live bait,a small pike will attack larger fish than itself

that apart i would never recommend anyone keeping koi in a tank they are a pond fish

koi look much better when viewed from above i.e. in a pond.
