First of all we need to define small.

remember that the smaller you go the more tricky it is to keep the water balance stable. you need to get as large as you an afford and then you can offer your system the best possible lighting without fear of temperature spikes.

I had thought about doing this in a quart jar. I had plans of macro, sexy shrimp, snails, and a pom pom crab. A lid on the jar would keep water from escaping keeping the right salinaty. They only problem would be keeping the water temp down with the right amout of sun light for the plants. Oh, and some way to get a small amount of current going. Too much to think about right now so I have put it on the back burner along with my indoor shark pond and many other money pits that will more than likely not work out well. :sly: Oh well, its still fun to dream.

I have a 10 gal nano reef (invert tank)

it is very challenging, especially if you have no experience. I've learned patience. LOTS of it. The water you have to test nearly every day (I do mine 3x a week) and refill the evaporated water at least once a week and frequent water changes.

There isnt much of fish you could get (I risked and got a few) and I hear there are plenty of corals you could get that are small and hardy. just do research before adding any.

As for crabs and shrimps, mine does great in a 10 gal. I have 2 shrimps, and aiming for a sexy shrimp if I can ever find them. 3 hermit crabs and a porclian anenome crab are doing wonderful too (After months after cycling and killing.. oops.)
