so for my AS level design technology, i decided to make a fishtank coffee table, nothing to big.
ive decided that the table should not be taller than 70cm and less than 60cm wide.

now im not sure on what size tank to go for, i was thinking maybe a 10gallon cube tank or a medium sized fish bowl, it cant be too big, because i have to consider weight, it will probably house 2-3 small goldfish, as it would be easier to go coldwater than tropical.

I was wondering if anyone had made anything similar to this and could you give me a few pointers.

thanks :good:

Not sure this is such a good idea.. Unless you can isolate the tank from the table top, I would say that use of the table would distress the fish, with the constant banging of stuff on the table !

There a fish tank coffee table for sale in my lfs. It's a hexagonal thing with a clear glass lid which is used as the table surface. Looks a recipe for disaster to me. My fish notice when I close the doors on my cabinet so I dread to think about clanking coffee cups etc. Sound travels better through water and solids than it does air.

Many people have made one, but my personal idea has been to make a larger square end table, the glass over the top would be much easier to move and you wouldnt have to worry about the light assuming you had a lamp on the table. Their isnt really an easy way to do it so that it's easy for you and for the fish. I've seen a design for one on the web that looked like it would actually be accomodating to the fish and I'll try to find it a little later.

If you want some examples and want to see some that are for sale check out Shirley aquatics main shop near Birmingham. went in recently and they had loads, but as everyone says I really think the idea isn't a good one as it would stress the hell out of the fish.

Have to agree with you, not a good idea at all. The first consideration must surely be the welfare of the fish, and having their home used as a repository for coffee cups will certainly distress them .

With this being an AS project I assume he'll make the equipment at school maybe take the table home then but a few of his fish in it take some pics then submit it. I don't think he plans to take it home and use it.

I certainly didn't with my AS stuff and neither did anyone else.

I'll try dig out some plans for you
