Around 2 1/2 months ago, my two new female platies had babies. 27 of their surviving fry are now happily situated in my 10g until I can find homes for them. However, when they were a day old I had to separate the bigger ones from the smaller ones because they were eating the smaller ones tails. The bigger ones went in a 3.5 gallon bucket with heater and bubbler, and the smaller ones stayed in the breeder trap in the main tank.
Cut to around two weeks ago. I got another female from my LFS and she was heavily gravid. I had already released around 24-25 of the biggest fry into the main part of the 10g, but had kept the smallest in the breeder box to give them a chance to get bigger. I ended up needing the breeder for the new fry, so I decided that they were big enough and released the last 2-3 into the 10g with the others.
Most of the little ones have grown since I put them in the main tank, but one little black one has not. Some of his siblings are almost double or triple his size! Recently, I noticed that his tail has been almost completely destroyed . I’ve also noticed that he doesn’t go after food like the others, and will only eat brine shrimp if he can reach them without having to swim very much. He’s taken to drifting along the waterline at the top of the tank and barely swimming. What do I do? I have 7 new babies in the breeder in a 5g bucket. The mother is currently in a 1g until I finish treating her for something, but when she is done she will go in the bucket (with mature filter and heater) until her quarantine is up and I can put her in my main 30g. Do I put the black one in with the new ones, even though the new ones are still technically “in quarantine” to stop him from being picked on? I’m afraid if I don’t do anything soon he’ll die.
Help!
