this morning i came home after leaving the lights out down here for 9 hrs (so they could get their beauty rest)... and when i slowly started turning on lights, then the tank light, i was worried because all the fish looked faded - like in fat albert when they start to wash out :p the ram worried me the most as he was very dark (which usually indicates stress)... but i guess he just turns very dark when he sleeps cause he's fine now that he's had his breakfast ;)

is this what usually happens in the dark? the fish become faded? i'd never seen the tetras so... not neon

Yes they do fade alittle because they are resting and they usually turn back to their normal colors when they wake up.

Not in my experience.

Maybe it's because your tank is over stocked?

Nope. Maybe YOU'RE wrong and YOU never keep them properly :p

Mony characins, and all paracheirodon aaalways turn off their colors and sleep on the bottom.

My neons go pale once their light has been out for over 7 hours, so I'm guessing it's normal.

Are you saying that his tank isn't over stocked? Bolivian Rams should be kept in a 20G tank MINIMUM, 10G is too small for active fish like Danios and by my estimation he has 16.5" of fish, 6.5" more than he ought to.

The fish he says was most affected by this was his Bolivian Ram, not a charcin and IN MY EXPERIENCE the colours of my rams (Blue not Bolivian) stand out extremely well when the lights are off. The one characin I do have, a RTBS is a very VERY dark black even when the lights first come on in the morning.

I love getting up in the morning and creeping over to the tankl to watch the fish wake-up. The real sleepy heads are my male dwarf gourami who always sleeps in the bottom left hand corner of the tank at the back, and the cardinal tetras who always seem to crowd around him. They all form up and dip thier heads slightly and look for all intents and purposes as if they are praying to me lol. One of my corydoras was asleep on its side the other day that gave me a fright but I'm getting used to some of their more enchanting peculiarities now.

@ombomb is right that the tank is over stocked... i'm aware... i'm working on getting a bigger tank but this one was given to me and just because i have all this information now doesn't mean i have loads of money :\ by the way, i'm a her not a him.

it does seem to be normal for them to fade a bit when they sleep; once they wake up their colours all come back bright as ever...

thanks for the replies everyone !!
