Hi

might be getting for free an old SLATE bed snooker table (6ft x 3ft) no cloth or anything on it, now im only getting it cos the guy doesn't want it and is going to dump it, so what I was thinking is I am in the middle of setting up a 4ft tank that I already have black sand for (caribsea) would there be any problem with me using this slate for the background?? its roughly 1" thick and I would have to cut it to get it in but that's not a big problem

can anyone see any probs with this? any kind of slate that cant go in a tank?

Cheers

Yea sounds good in theory but thats going to be #41#### heavy, wouldn't like to see what would happen if it fell over whilst inside the tank!

well the plan was to sealant it in the tank, im not worried about the floor as they are concrete as long as it doesn't make the tank unstable but I doubt it will when its full of water.

I will pick the table up and see what I think when I can see just how heavy the slate is and how thick, could be thinner yet im just going by the average slate bases on snooker tables.

I've used slate as the background to my tank, but split the slate down so that it was relatively thin. I siliconed it to the glass so that it was fixed securely and it seems fine. It didn't weigh too much so hasn't added a great deal to the overall weight of the tank.

Ive picked this up today, its 6ft by 3ft and and inch thick! weighs a ton but is lovely!

Do you have any pics of your background?? i was wondering should i try to put flat clean pieces in, will have to be 3 pieces to get past the braces of the tank or should i go down the split it and bits route?

I liked the idea of a clean flat slate wall but the more i think about it if i split it and break it up it could look cool?

Its soft enough to rub down and get any sharp bits off i guess, anyways first i have to get my wife to help me out the van with it! haha

Wow, that's a huge piece of slate you have there!

I used pieces about 30x40cm and trimmed them to suit. I opted for a rustic, more textured, riven surface rather than dead smooth. I left a couple of very small gaps between the slate pieces to encourage plants like anubias and java ferns to root into. I will try to get some pics uploaded to try and show the finished effect.
