I want to add some slate to my tank, will i have to buy it from my LFS or can i use normal slate if i hose it down really well???
Cheers, Joemuz

checkout the pinned rock topic (see sig) for the kinds of slate that are safe/unsafe.
if you have any questions after reading that fee free to ask.

Slate is not chemically active and is something I've always used. The principle issue with slate is the sharpness of the edges which do need to be filed off.

Thankz, i made sdhure it wasnt sharp cos i was worried bout that!
Cheers, Joemuz!

I bought a lump of slate from the garden centre and then went to town with a hammer!! VERY enjoyable and some funky shapes were gathered. Then the edges were filed off and everything was washed and scrubbed (just in water) to wash away any dust and then it was put into tank.

I have never lost any fish with this!! Just watch if your hands are wet. don't drop the slate
