Modern glass can be quite strong. They do bullet proof glass and I saw a documentary where they dropped a car (mini cooper) on a sheet of glass that was suspended a foot off the ground. The car was 10 feet above the glass when they dropped it on the glass. The glass didn't break. It was really amazing. So glass can be made quite strong nowadays.
