Skimmers, Im Confused?

im a bit confused about skimmers, can someone explain?

also recomend a good (cheap) one for a 125l?

A skimmer is not essential if you stock / feed correctly but if this is your first attempt I would use a skimmer

There is very little to choose from in the 100L range the Deltec MCE300 is excellent but will be a bit big and pricey only other one would be the TMC nano not great but its cheap roughly £20 second hand.

what i am confused about is people seem to use this thing in the cabnet for something? this is what i dont get?

i think the TMC nano would be best for now, thanks!
