Ok as some of you know I bought a 600v2 skimmer, I took it back yesterday (it was 2nd hand) as it was leaking and was very very noisey!

Anyway he began to test it and started it up in the water (is that right?) and to my amazement it was quiet :S I couldn't beleive it! Im not sure if its because he reduced the water flow in (is this essential as I never done this?) or it because the shop was noisy (which it didnt seem to be) but even when i put my ear to it I couldn't hear it!

I then said to him due to the leak ill take another skimmer and they only had a 400v2 skimmer left, that was perfect for my tank so I took that one which was brand new.

Once I got home I set it all up and even added the water tap thing to the pump which I never did before, is this essential as it takes up more room and seems you can do the same job if you reduce the air?? I don't know why you need to do this??

Anyway cutting a long story short, I turned it on (outside the tank) and to my amazement it was just as noisy as the last one!!!

Does anyone have any ideas or am I being fussy? I would say to give you an idea it's just as noisy as a hairdryer!

I did change the piping from the pump to the skimmer as the tube you get with it doesn't bend!!

Anyone???

Thats what I thought but then it's the 2nd one i've had!

The original one I returned he tested it and it was pretty quiet :hyper:

ok guys I think I have it a bit better..

Few questions

1) Is it essential to have the water tap on in the tank?
2) If so how much water should I let through?
3)If 1/2 isn't essential then surely reducing the air flow does the same trick?
4) how much can u adjust the above till teh skimmer isn't working correctly, reason being the less water you let through / air the quieter it is.

Hi all,

I've made it quieter now by reducing the water flow from the pump into the skimmer via the tap supplied.

Question is, most of the noise seems to be coming from the pump now

I heard storys you can make the pump quieter, is this true?

Is the pump resting against the glass or some other hard piece of equipment? Its possible that its rattling...

I don't think so Ski but i'll double check.

It's like a buzzing noise
