Hello Guys, skip to the bottom to cut out the blurb

Im currently in the mists of setting up my second marine fish tank (first proper tank, the first is a Ghettoed beauty)

The Display tank is a 48" x 18" x 18"(LxDxH,its actually around 22" high but the overflow is 18") with a Sump the total net volume is around 80 US Gal.

Currently my equipment list looks like this:-

Arcadia Series 3 twin 250 MH with 48 watts of T8/6's

2 x Tunze 6100 Streams with Multicontroller and Moonlight thingy (tunze owners will know)

Tunze water alarm (previous set up)

Tunze Auto top off (its the older style but works all the same)

Deltec Fluidizor for phosphate remover/Carbon/Sand (might be leaking though possible O ring)

El cheapo Sump return pump (previous set up, possibly being changed for a better model probably an ehiem or something)

So as you can see ive got a pretty good line up of equipment (or atleast i think i do for this size tank) but im unsure which skimmer to buy, now i defiantly want a skimmer thats over Kill but currently struggle for size within my sump. im looking at Deltec and Tunze gear possibly a V2 skim money isnt a massive issue as i d’rather spend a bit more now and keep the equipment for later then have to replace it from a fresh *coughs* red sea max prism*coughs*

I quite like the idea of a downdraft ?! (where you pump the overflow straight into the skimmer) style skimmer but space is at a premium.

The sump is currently laid out thus

Chamber one:- where id like the skimmer to go/lead into is 8.5"x12"x10"(LxDxH) and has a small chamber as a bubble reducer before entering chamber 2.

Chamber two:-where i plan to make refugium is 11"x8"x12" ( i could A) swap it around so that the first chamber is the refugium or b) shorten this chamber but id have to move quite a few panels of glass which i just put in and would be a PITA tbh)

End chamber:- with contain the Auto top off, a possible heater and the Sump return pump. which if powerful enough will feed into the fluidizor before entering the main display.

So after all that my question is what skimmer would be suitable to fit within a space thats 8.5"x12"x10" ideally or second best 11"x12"x8" (LxDxH) that’s a downdraft style (if in chamber one or feeds into chamber one, remember i have floor space within the cabinet but id d’rather have the skimmer in the sump if i can.) and is over kill for a 80 USG/280-300lt net volume.
Thinking Tunze or Deltec maybe off ebay or new if the price is right.

ive also been flicking through euroreef, grotech H&S seem to have good reviews as well but i cnat find a seller/site, there was alos a german Brand that was floresent orange and clear perspex that seeme dot perfom very well.

In short im open to any brand thats quiet and reasonable quality

Bingo. Your only other option might be the Aquamedic Turboflotor, but I've no idea how big those are...

Why those over the other brands? better quality/efficency in relation to price? avalability? id drather spend more now and set it up properly then change it later on.
ill look into the turbo floators

Edit: wow it really is spelt Turbo flotor

I'm a marine newbie myself, but feel I can answer your question about Ski-Fletch's brand choice, so I'll give it a shot.

Tunze have a realy good reputation and build very good quality stuff in pretty much everything they produce. Their customer service is apparently also very good.

Deltec I have experience with through work and they are serious bits of kit, with a good reputation and build quality.

Aqua Medic also make good quality gear and I have expirience with their HOB skimmers through work again. Also serious bits of kit, but the type of skimmer you are after in their range (from the select few I've seen the specs for that is) are large. Their Turboflotor shortly compact 3000 (I think thats the number) for example has an 8" diameter reaction chanmer and stands 2ft tall :fun: With the feed attachments, I'd doubt it will fit in your prefured compartment A :/

With my experience with Deltec and Aquamedic in the equipment hell that is a LFS environment where every pice of equipment is subjected to abuse, to survive for more that 7 years without faultering takes a lot of doing :good: I'd have no problems buying any of these three skimmer brands for home use, and all three should out-last your interest in the marine hobby (or you, either way ;) :p ).

There are other brands about, but they either don't have the quality, or they are new to the market. The TMC V2 skimmers from the reviews I've read are rubbish quality and have a habbit of developing faults arround the time where warrently runs out :X That said, there are still enough users about that have had a good time with them to keep the range going... Their cheap RRP compaired to other brands could also have something to do with it ;)

Tunze, Aquamedic and Deltec are the three main players when it comes to skimmers, and asking for a favorite can lead to discussions as heated as those over exturnal filters in the freshwater section

yes i can see where your coming at i might sod the whole insump issue and get one that feeds into the sump. i need to see how much space i will have (which i doubt will be much)

Ive got a few bits of Tunze gear and know the build quality is quite high thankfully ive never had to go through their customer suport (Ye old style ATO, Water alarm, 2 x 6100 and a ye older version multicontroller) i toyed with the idea of a wave box but seeing as you shouldnt put anyhitng 50cms near it i thought against it as that would take a large chunk of the tank out.)

I think im swinging towards the deltec gear ill know hopefully within the next week or so as we are reinforcing the tank stand (just dont trust 15 mm MDF when second hand, it looks fine on the outside but closer inspection shows some water damage but thats what you exspect with a second hand tank.)
