The Bettas in my lps are pretty much all the same size, with fairly good finnage. The ones in the lfs however, are different sizes. Some small with small finnage. Others with grand flowing fins and bodies definitely bigger. Are the bigger ones just typically a mature betta? The lps store says theirs are usually around 6 months old. I didn't ask the lfs about ages, but the clerk said they just order 'male bettas' and get what they get. Should I be concerned about getting an 'old' betta? I will ask when next I am in, but was wondering about others experiences.

Old bettas will have very long and flowing finnage. If you don't mind having one with about less than a year left in its life expectancy, then by all means get one. They are still beautiful.
