size of my tank

i may sound a bit dim here but like i say in the newbie forum,i only know the basics and would like to learn more.so here goes

How do you work out how much water per tank,i have a 4 foot tank,so how many gallons is that?

Just for info, as most here are from the US, thats 44.73 US gallons.
