im thinking im starting to have a diatom problem, since my sand for some time now, has been covered in a golden brown film, which always comes out during the day. ive heard wats best is to clean ur tank, allow it to sit, then siphon the diatom particles. only ? is how do u siphon sand without suckin in all the sand, and the animals living in the sand? its just my tanks comin along so well, and the brown sand is just killin the tanks beauty. any help is appreciated thx

Sometimes when I see brown algae growing in my sand I mix the sand up so that the sand that had the brown algae on it goes to the bottom where there is no light for it to grow no longer and soon fades away.

If your siphon is too hard and sucks sand up, just kink it or tie a little not in it to slow it down ;). Also remember to more stir the sand. Dont CRAM the wide vac tube in the sand and leave it there, you have to sort of prush it by the sand, rarely fully submerging it for too long.

I've seen so many posts about this... I say SkiFletch video tape yourself, well not yourself but your siphoning talent :good: !
we will all love you for it :hyper:
Ter :p

Thats what I was thinking! Someone *ahem ahem Ski* should video tape themselves doing a water change. It would be fun to see someone do it so we may pick up some pointers on how to improve our water changing and cleaning sand. :good:
