Similar fish to Jack Dempsey, but smaller.

Could you recommend a fish similar to a Jack Dempsey in temperament, but for a smaller tank (30gal)?

I had one for 2 years and really liked him, but he got too big for my tank so I had my local store re-home him.

Hi and welcome to the forum

There are no small similar looking fish regarding the temperament and aggressive behaviour of the Jack Dempsey but it you want a similar looking fish that is smaller and more peaceful, then get a blue acara or an electric blue acara. They are the same fish but the electric blue is a colour form of the normal blue acara.

I don't know the dimensions of a 30 gallon tank but a 3 foot tank or bigger would be fine for 1 or a pr of blue acaras.

Hm, IMO 30 gallons is a bit small for an EBA. Try a trio or pair of dwarf cichids. Anything from the genus Apistogramma, nannacara, laetacara or microgeophagus would work. Nannacara are Laetacara probably look most like a JD. Dwarf cichlids are generally a lot less aggressive and make great community fish!
