So this week I had an overhaul of my 80l planted tank, and decided I would give silver tip tetras a go, so I bought a shoal of 6 to see how they looked in the tank.  The next day I visited a different LFS to browse and thought I'd up the shoal to 9, so happily purchased another 3 tetras...

Was gazing at my tank a minute ago and noticed...the 3 new additions have adipose fins, supposedly absent from silver tips!

A quick google came up with a PFK article describing Hyphessobrycon brumado, a new species described in just 2010, which seems to be what I have.  They seem to behave the same as the silver tips so far and they are getting along nicely, however I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this species?

I'll probably get a few more, but if they turn out to be big, nippy, plant-eating tetras like some other Hyphessobrycon tetras, they will have to go in my community tank!

Will try add pics shortly if anyone's interested :).

Never heard of them before but they look nice.

Tek oot.

Just checked mine out of interest and mine are all without adipose fin so they must be the real deal (not that it would have mattered in too much if they where anything else

I'd assume that if they are interacting well with the Silver tips the'y assume their characteristics. Still I knowhow you feel I felt compelled to purchase extra Celestial pearl danio when I was accidental gifted two from a LFS

Yeah, even though the look so similar, I still feel that I have 2 incomplete shoals of different tetras lol.  Upon further observation, the H.brumado seem to be a little more nippy than the silvertips but not by much.

Yeah, I've got one neon after the rest died, and I'm going to get Cardinals instead, because they're a bit hardier now, but that's gonna eat at me, even if others can't tell the difference.

Tek oot.
