Hi Folks, I have these sharks and want to know which breed exactly they are, I was sold them as silver sharks( diamond sharks). Thanks in advance..

I believe they are Acrossocheilus summatranus, otherwise known as the sumatra or large scaled barb.

They look like Bala Sharks to me but I'm no expert.

not silver sharks but would have to agree they look like barbs of some kind!
nath1 :good:
how big are they?? they are really gorgeous fish

They look like Bala Sharks to me but I'm no expert.

They are def not bala's. Mid-section is way too round, much more barb like so either a tin-foil (which I dont think they are as they don't have the right coloration), or a very close species to Tin-foils

Thanks guys for the replys - done some more mooching around and they seem to be Tin foil barbs - Barbonymus altus - get to be around 14" so should be nice - we have 7 so should be very nice when they are geting on for full size - at the moment they are between 3" and 5" and growing at an alarming rate -_- - beautifull fish though - look real nice shoaling down the tank - got a thing for the plants but hey I can forgive them for that...lol

The true TinFoil Barb is Barbonymus schwanenfeldii, which is clearly not the fish pictured. The genus Barbonymus are characterised by having a large number of rows of relatively small scales, it is this that gives them the smooth burnished tinfoil appearance.

I do not believe they are of that genus at all, and still believe them to be young H. wetmorei.
growing at an alarming rate
That also fits the species, they are famous tank busters, and well known plant eaters. H. wetmorei is frequently imported and sold to unsuspecting keepers. It is a shame, they are great looking fish, but they REALLY take some looking after, above and beyond what most hobbyists can provide.

Thanks Lateral Line... have done some more searching and found some cool asian websites and indeed you are right - they are Hypsibarbus wetmorei for sure - good job we have the big tank - looks like we are going to need it :-( thanks again :good:

Hi Nath - the tank is kinda huge - 8 and a half foot long by 2ft x 2ft - 960 litres :hyper: had it a short while now - only went out for replacment filter pads for our Vision 260 and became the proud owners of this...
