The ones in my LFS are currently a cute 2" or so, but I know they get pretty big. I also know you can only get one, but my online reading so far seem to suggest they are quite easy keepers and often quite peaceful towards smaller fish and so might be ok in a community tank..so I'm wondering if one might fit in my 180litre/45gal tank. How big will he get? How long will it take to get that big? Would he get on with mollies and danios? I'm guessing he wouldn't get on with the planned anglefish or guppies (long fins=nipping?), but would be happy to be corrected :)

Obviously if I add the shark I'll have to give up something else in the current plan in my sig but I *might* get a new tank and have something like:

1) Angelfish & guppies, bristlenose cat.
2) Silver Shark, Marble mollies, danios, raphael catfish.

If I did get a new tank for the shark - what size would you suggest? Min as well as recommended please - I'm not a millionaire!

Thanks,

aj

I don't see any way that you can keep large, over 30cm fish in tank, that is about 100cm long and probably about 40cm wide.

I would only buy them if I owned a tank size 200cm/60cm/50cm at least. Lenght 250-300cm is much better. They are fast, they live in shoal so they need space alot. I would be very happy, if those fish aren't sold in lfs. I think they belongs to only huge commercial tanks, not home.

Unfortunatelu name "silver shark", "bala shark" etc. sells - even when it's look similar to shark, but has nothing to do with sharks.

If you cannot afford to keep them, then you don't buy them ;) And now because you know, that this fish need space, you know how large tank you need to have - if you going to keep them.

I just saw this page, and I must say, that she must be definitely blond! 55 gallons and 35 cm of fish!? Only blonds can be so amusing! :X

Hi There-

I am not sure where you heard that you can only get one silver shark, but that is absolutely incorrect. SIlver sharks need to be kept in the minimum of pairs but threes are the right choice.

a 45 gallon tank would be big enough for 3 silver sharks for about 6 to 9 months. after that they need at least a 75 gallon tank as the absolute bare minimum. 180 gallon to 200 gallons and up is the best choice for these fish.

Currently I have 3 (2 under 3" and 1 at 8") in my 55 gallon. I plan to upgrade to a 150 to 180 gallon by christmas time.

If i had to do it over though I would not have gotten them at all. they are gorgeous fish but they need extremely large tanks as they are very skiddish! I would stay far far away from them unless you can afford a HUGE tank.

'kay - cheers folks! Just thought it was worth an ask...I'll stick with the angelfish plan for now...
