Hi
48x12x15 tank
30 gallon

can this house 4 silver dollars and 1 synotis catfish please?

Afraid not, I would say 48x18 would be the bare minimum, they are very active and sometimes skittish fish that can swim at high speeds. I had 4 in my vision 260 and rehomed them, I felt there wasn't enough room for them and thats before they were fully grown.

shroobs right i have 4 large, silvers and when i do water changes they fly from side to side at a 100 miles anhour, they always banging into things, iam going to sell them shortly, one of mines a spotted one to,they gr8 looking fish but really shy,,kenny

The spotted silver dollars you may be able to get away with. I had 3 of them from wharf, lovely fish especially the males, with their black edged fins and spots.

They grow smaller than regular silver dollars (and look better) so are a better choice if you feel you must get silver dollar like fish. Various sources say they grow from between 4-6" so still a fairly big when you consider the shape of the body. Richard Hardwick in THIS article on disc characins puts their size down at 4.5" which is what I would go on out of all the web sources.

good link there shroob, yes thats mine in the link the spotted ones smaller about 4in,the bigest silver is about 7in,and how true they wont allow me to put a real plant in there,i have loads of artificial, when i drop the food pellets in they catch them and swim about eating them, really greedy fish too,,kenny

good article Shroob cheers for that

Carney as we've mentioned a few times in yours many posts on silver dollars recently they really need large swimming quarters due to their behaviour. They grow large ( mine are about saucer size almost) and they are very active and sometimes skittish. when I kept some in a 4ft 10 or so years ago I didn't liek them cos they were skittish. They are now one f my favourite fish in my tank as they are confident in a large tank. you won't get the benefit in a tank that size
