Silver Dollars

well i have a common silverdoller they do get large mine is in a 29 and he is three years old he is around 5inc now i like them better the the royal spotted as the can be agrive so try a common and you can sex them by knowing the males have red on the anal fines good luck

Silver dollars are schooling fish, so you'd need at least 5 or 6... but not too sure how many exactly you could fit in there. They USUALLY don't get bigger than 6' or 7', but they do live for a long, long time. A friend of mine rescently got rid of her last silver dollar, that lived for 18 years! She actually had given it away to someone, she got tired of keeping fish :( .

well now i tend to differ mine has been alone all he,s life i mean with out other sd,s and does just fine.and they get as big as a dinner plate if well care for, sorry to sound like a know it all,but this is true :)they are shy fish and really like clown loach as tank mates, mine is in love with a clown in my tank lol

metfan can I suggest that instead of silver dollers that you look out for
Discus Tetras.

they are a lot better, IMHO, and go beyond schooling. I call them a pack fish
as that is how tight they seem to be with eachother.

If your heart is set on the dollers I'd say 5 would be the limit fo a 55G
and have no other fish, except maybe a few bottom dwellers.

Silver dollars are really neat fish, but they are hearty eaters and produce a large waste amount. I think you could do 5 or 6 in a 55, with a few bottom dwellers like kuhlii loaches or pygmy cories. Good filtration like a wet/dry would be good. As you may already know, a planted tank is impossible with them.

not sure what type of silver dollar you guys are keeping!
i have 3 species, the small silver type with black spots with a blueish glow.
and the other sort....

mine were 50 p sized in november, now they are hand sized, they are silver, with extended anal fins and have red edging to all their fins and also red all around his chest kind of like a toothless pirahna, my brother has some as his workplace that a man brang in and they looked just like mine but they were the size of dinner plates....
i think they are called " red hooks " or something.
anyone else familiar with them ?

Myleus rubripinnis (Red hook silver dollars) do grow larger, about 8 inches as silver dollars grow to about 5 inches.

but i seen soem dinner plate size!! im talking about 13 " they were definetely not pacu's as they were sold as " red hook silver dollar " and where brang in by someone who was converting to marine.

There are well over 12 species of Silver Dollars, but none that I know of grow to 13 inches. Im no silver dollar expert, but from my understanding Mylossoma duriventre is the largest silver dollar species. Growing up to 10 inches.
