I'm after some information on Silver Dollars as i'm thinking of picking some up in the morning.

I realise they get to a fair size but that isn't a problem.

I'm wondering how long they live and how fast they grow.

Also, what's the average going rate?

They have the potential to live for 10 years. tankmates and they grow fairly slowly, especially once they reach about 3" or so.

Mine grew fairly quickly from 2 inchs to 4 inchs in about 3 months.

Silver Dollars are a fairly well behaved species of fish but do need to have a pretty good size aquarium. I wouldn't recommend keeping them in less than a 55 gallon tank because of their size and the room needed to swim around. These guys are herbivores and definately NEED vegetable matter in their diet. No flake or pellet is going to sufficiently fulfill their dietary needs. I use lettuce on a regular basis and occasionally throw in an aquarium plant that I have lying around in one of my other tanks.

I have always thopught it would be cool to keep a few Silver Dollars.
If I get sick of cichlids anytime soon (Which I highly doubt) I might switch my fish in for silver dollars....cichlids are sooo expansive around here. I bought some for around $20 a peice - and I only have 6
