I currently added live plants on my Tank and it looks so nice and natural, I'm also looking into getting Silver Dollars but I heard that they would make live plants into a salad bar buffet :D I only have about 3 and their all from south east asia and the SD are from south america, just wonderin if they would eat plants that's not in their natural habitat. And BTW I know my tank is not Big enough for a full grow SD but might upgrade if i have to, just how fast do they grow?.... Thanks

Silver Dollars are fast growing lawn mowers, they demolish most species of plants except the hardier species like Java Fern. They tend to take a liking to certain plants that you tend to stick away from, feeding algae wafers and veg helps stop the destruction a little.

Silver dollars grow quite quickly, mine have grown about 1" in a month. They are always hungry and will destroy any plants you add, they will even nibble on tough plants like java fern, anubias and giant vallis if a constant supply of green food isnt available.

SD's are notorious plant munchers, you can try to deflect their attention with copious desirable veg, but they'll still have a go.

That sucks :( I might have to pass with the SD. Do you guys have any suggestion on what fish i could get that would do well with the cichlids on my sig and that won't destroy my plants?. I was also thinking of tiger barbs but they are a notorious fin nippers and I really don't wanna experiment with this...

Why don't you consider some other fairly large schooling fish like congo tetras or rainbowfish for example??

 silver dollars are great fish ,not to big , not to small , just not in a planted tank .

like finned lumber jacks, only much faster .

bosmani rainbow fish are nice colorful fish .

I personally don't think you have room for them. Maybe if you got a bigger tank, but not as is. Between the common pleco, discus and Rams you are overstocked as is. Sorry, I know that's not what you want to hear..... :*)

Are you looking for schooling fish specifically???

Angels school, just an idea? But you don't have room for any of those either!! :dunno:

Hmmmmmmmm............................ :shifty:

Tiger barbs are perfect, as long as you keep them in more than 5, they'll take all their fin-nipping (which is not much, I only have three and lots of long finned species in my tank!) out on themselves. They come in many different colors too!!!
