Silver dollar question

I have 3 silver dollars in a 40 gallon, and 1 of them is chasing the other 2. I checked the water and nitrates were about 20, so i did a water change, but it is still chasing the others. I have had them for a few months now, and this is the first time i have seen them like this. Is there something that I should be concerned about? The one that is doing all of the chasing, I just noticed has a dark spot on its body, it chases after them, and then rubs against their sides and then goes after the other. What is going on with them? Any ideas?

Sounds like they are spawning... if it however gets any more violent then i would suggest to take out the silver $

My silvers only chase if there is food involved. I would guess spawning too.

I believe that spawning is quite rare for Silvers in a domesticated environment. The dark spots are normal. I have one Roosevelti Silver, which has the black spots and if the water temp. creeps up too high then a larger black spot will appear on either sid of it's head. Don't worry about that.

And as far as the chasing goes it may be that they are dancing. My 2 larger Silvers dance together and it looks quite like a chase, but they are both enjoying it. They go back and forth, back and forth and rub against one another, well it's usually the chaser that rubs against the chasey and the chaser is always my Roosevelti the one w/the black spots. I believe him to be the male of the two larger ones. I just love when my Silvers dance. )

Thank you Silver for your post, it is good to have you back. They have settled back down, and I never did find any eggs in there, which is fine as I would very quickly need more tanks. They seem quite content, and are still eating every single plant i put in there. I have been growing plants in other tanks and putting them in for them to munch on. May just have to go plastic for them, but would rather find a real plant they wont eat. Still searching.
