Hi there,

I've kept a few silver dollar fish for about 2 years in a 5ft tank (pls see below of the tank contents), but none of them has ever laid eggs.

Is there any special requirement to make them breed?

Also, how can you tell if they're male or female?

Thanks in advance! ;)

There are a number of species which are sold with the common name "Silver Dollar". General advice is soft acidic water, quite warm water, given that as long as the fish are large enough, are in good condition, and not stressed, they spawn quite freely. They scatter large numbers of non-adhesive eggs as a group which drop to the substrate.

Sexing, other then general observations of females being widewr from above, and somewhat deeper in the body when full of eggs, depends somewhat on the species.

I've read that the anal fin of the male Silver Dollar is red.... I have 4 SD, one of them with the anal fin red, I assume that is the only male...
