Hi all!!
I was wondering if any of you know of any tetra or similar that are similar in characteristics and appearence to either the silver dollar tetra or the red line torpedo barb. I was looking at both of these for my 90l tank but silver dollars eat plants and need a much ;larger tank and the torpedo barbs are just much to pricy for me. im also looking for a centre piece fish/couple for the tank. Curretly have 3 phantom tetra (black), 2 siemese flying fox, 2 cardinial tetra (had 6 but 4 died from the stress of house moving 4 months back), 6 cherry barbs and 4 beutiful sterba cory's that I love!!
Thanks for any advice/tips given am looking forward to hear what some of you would have to say!!

i would up the numbers of tetras up to at least 6 of each, giving you a better group of both making them happier and secure. also for the same reasons get another 3 sterbai corys for the same reason.
then your stocking would be-

6 x cardinal tetras
6 x phantom tetras
2 x siamese flying fox
6 x cherry barbs
6 x sterbai corydoras

what is the dimensions of the tank because its pretty full with 26 fish in a 90L

as for replacements for silverdollars and torpedo barbs then i cant think of any off the top of my head. maybe a flat tetra like the phantoms but with already having those i wouldnt want too many similar fish. cant think of a replacement for the barb except for SAE, flying fox, rtbs but these should be kept in bigger tanks than you have im affraid and can normally only be kept in a single fish to stop aggression.

Thank you!! I was considering uping the number of cardinials to 6 to get that shoaling effect again. I think another 3 phantoms would be good but may consider getting some (4-6) dwarf neon rainbows. I love the shoaling nature of these and the colour when there all together. was also thinking of investing in some more cory's, and was looking at adding a couple of peppered or leopard ones due to the high pricing of sterba's in my LFS. i did have some kribs but sold them to a couple down the road due to very high aggresion not only to each other but to the rest of the fish. wasnt pleasant to watch.
Umm, my tank is 3ft, by 1 and a half foot. I think. cant remember exactly but know its around 90-95l.

check these out, they are the nearest thing to silverdollars i could find....
Discus Tetra - Brachychalcinus orbicularis
i getting more corys but not sterbai i would get the same species, maybe 4 or 5 peppered. you did the right thing with the kribs they are not to be mixed with corys :good:
i would get more cardinals rather than neons to make an even happier group of fish

Hi all!!
I was wondering if any of you know of any tetra or similar that are similar in characteristics and appearence to either the silver dollar tetra or the red line torpedo barb.

If its the Silver Dollar colour you like, perhaps Platinum Tetra? Someone close by recently bought these *cough* mattlee *cough*
If its their shape, perhaps Bleeding Heart or Columbian Tetra.

Hmm, Redline Torpedo Barb alternatives... Rummynose Tetra (for the red); X-ray Tetra (for the black/yellow stripes); Sawbwa Barb (although these guys stay rather small)? If you lived nearby and had plans for a bigger tank in the near future, I would have said visit Aquajardin, who are selling ~200 commercially bred (not wild, who are close to extinction) Redline Torpedos at £5 a go...

Yes i will look around for more sterba's for a better price, £9 each near me. Im hoping that they may breed. Two are getting rather cosey and going everywhere together. We can only hope!!
as with the cardinals, do you think it would be possible to get a larger shoal than 6?? more like 8-10?? i do love to watch them darting around in their neon colours!!
Also had a look at those discus tetra, they do look promising, and seem to have the colour and shape of the silver dollars!! Will definitely look out for these in the LFS.
Thank you very much for the help, its been great to talk to someone that isnt just trying to sell me stuff.

ooh yeah cracking fish but maybe too small and may look a bit lost in a tank ot that size..... ive got 17 in a 2 ft tank and might get some more.....

Aww wow!! those sawbwa's look fantastic!! thats the kind of shape/colour im looking for, kind of ticks both boxes for me!! you say their small?? what size is small?? 1-2inch? cus i think a shoul of a few of them could look great. will definitely keep my eye open for them.
platinum tetra, iv seen them before and considered them. the colour is very nice and i think under the right light they'd look good.
thanks alot for you help you guys, you have introduced me to species iv overlooked/not heard of. thank you!! great forum with great help given!!

sawbwas get only to about 1.5 inches, i would go for rummynose tetras out of the 2. they shoal the best of all my fish and have great looking tail fins too. heres a link to a pic of my platinum or gold tetras, sorry the pic isnt brilliant but you get the idea....

aw cool. thanks. I will make a trip to the LFS over the weekend. Think i may upgrade and buy a second tank, thinking 190-220l. Should be big enough for some nice shoaling fish and a few angles. :)

just be carefull with smaller narrow bodied tetras with angels as they may well end up as lunch.... some get away with it but lots dont! fish like neons, small cardinals, small rummynoses etc that kind of shape fish isnt recomended with angels. a more flatter shape like lemon tetra, phantoms etc will be ok :good:
