Kiarra
Former Betta Breeder
My silly males are somewhat incompetent.
The first male (a Delta) chased the female off after a meager 35 or so minutes of embracing, and now I have a total of FIVE fry that will be two weeks old tomorrow. They're beautiful, healthy, and growing so very fast, but there's only the five of them.
The second male (a Doubletail) bred with that same female (so Yeevia, if you read this, you're a grandfather twice over, because that's the female I bought from you again) about a week later. She was so fat with eggs even after using the ones from the embraces with the Delta, and I'd been feeding her well, so I put her in with the Doubletail. They spawned less than 24 hours later. There is ONE fry in that tank that I can see. None of the others ever hatched, even with their dad tending them, and there were well over a hundred eggs in that nest. There may be more fry in there that I just can't see, but I doubt there are more than 10. It's a pretty open tank, and the only place to really hide is behind the heater.
Silly males. I prep for over a hundred...they give me less than 10. Combined. Ah, well. At least they're cute.
Edit: I found one more in close inspection of the Doubletail's fry tank. So that makes a total of TWO!
