Silly Betta Question

I've noticed that some bettas have circular shaped fins: http/www.sweetwaterseaspwd.com/betta/ima...e_hm_framed.jpg

Why? Can't someone tell me why???

well the first fish, I believe is a Half Moon. It is flaring and thats why its like that. If it wasnt it would most likely look like the 2nd pic.
So Tail out= Flaring
Tail flat= Regular

And they flare when they see another male betta and want to beat him up right?

Basically, not that you should ever put two bettas in together or anything and yes, the first picture is a picture of a halfmoon betta, while the second one isa veitail. There are different types of betta splendens and they are classified by teh shape of their tail.

There are crowntails, veiltails (the most common ones), halfmoons, doubletails, combtials.

Veiltails are the most common ones and usually the ones you see at petstores, they're no longer really considered as "good" betta (though i think they are still beatiful none the less).

Crowntails look like this:

doubtails literally have two tails, like this:

halfmoons are the first betta that you have on your list, they are very very pretty becuase their tails spread 180 degrees.

combtails are a mix of crowntails and veiltails, so the crowns are not as distinct.

p.s. there's no real reason to "why" this happens, its' like poeple having curly hair or straight hair, just genetics

Are there any differences in behavior between all of the different types of bettas?

no i dont' think so, oh an di forgot plakats, short finned "fighter" bettas.

I believe they are a bit more aggressive then theo ther kinds, they just have short fins intsead of long flowing ones.

Personally i dont' think there is a distinct behavioral differnece between say a crowntail and a veiltail...i never notice anything anyways
